Who else is always packing on the verge of the weight limits? Some airlines actually weigh everything you carry-on. Airasia says they will. They don't allow passengers to take more than 7 kilograms on board with them. Their policy states that the 7 kilograms includes everything you bring (personal item + larger bag or luggage). So far, I have only had the larger item weighed. Which allowed me to move heavier items to my purse before being weighed, ie, electronics & toiletries.
Here is a table where we will keep track of where and how they weigh. So you know what you can get away with and what to prepare for (aka, when to move those heavy toiletries to another location).
Airport | Weighed? | Where? | More info? |
Kuala Lumpur (KUL) | yes, not personal item | Before Security | They have their own terminal. |
Nha Trang (CRTC) | yes, not personal item | Check-in Counter | It went perfectly once, second time... paid $130 for too much weight. |

Nha Trang (CRTC)
On our flight to Kuala Lumpur from this airport, they weighed the carry-on luggage piece but not our personal items (backpack, purse, etc). The second time we flew out of this airport with Airasia, everything went to shit. Basically it seemed that upper management was there and wanted to make sure they would make money, so every single item was weighed from every single passenger at the check-in counter. Many people paid overage fees, and we were some of them. To my surprise our 2 large check-in bags weighed exactly 20kg (the allowed amount), which was a miracle since we didn't have a scale and I had no idea how much they really were. The real problem was the carry-on items. Just our electronics easily weigh 10kg (you are allowed 7kg per person so 14kg total for us). All of our carry-on items totaled 30kg, which was going to cost 440,000 vnd per kg overage (16 * 440k), leading to about $300 or approx $20 per kg in excess. That wasn't going to happen.... we threw some stuff away, moved things around. Best decision was 'going to the bathroom' and leaving things inside the bathroom while we weighed the bags again. This was a risky move, easily could have had all of those items confiscated) but saved us a ton (thanks husband, great idea). In the end we got it down to 22kg from 30kg, and they charged us for 5kg (about $130) over instead of 8kg. They said they were being "nice". Lovely. Fair enough, they are in their right to do so. I was so close to paying $40 to be able to check in an additional 10kg. If I had done it, we would have been fine. Lesson learned, with Airasia, if you are on the edge of weight, and you're not sure, buy extra online before. $40 for 10kg additional is way more affordable than $200.
Overall, as I've gotten older and smarter with travel, I think I will be avoiding budget airlines as much as possible. Unless, you know you will only bring a backpack!
If you have flown with Airasia in other airports, I would love to know to be able to add more to this table! Write in the comments below!
